A Coercive State

Why is self-determination being neglected in the aid office? A commonsense response is that people must find “jobs” or they won’t be able to afford a satisfying life. People who rely on “work” must cooperate in the aid office because they need those supplemental benefits for basic survival. This explanation, however, does not match the data. Interviewees unanimously reported needing more benefits because what they receive is not enough for their survival.
